Penrith 1st XI vs St.Annes 1st XI

After winning the toss on a dull, overcast day, Penrith CC decided to put the visitors into bat first. The toss is always a crucial part of the game, and with the bragging rights of winning it, we thought that bowling would put the visitors under the pump from the get go, and it did just that...

After an extremely slow start, St.Annes found themselves 56-2 at the half-way mark. Credit must go to the start provided by Paul Hindmarch and Zakhele Qwabe. They hit their straps from the word go.

Shortly after the drinks break, St.Annes made a remarkable recovery, with their professional hitting a brilliant knock of 83. Penrith were given the opportunity of taking his golden wicket when he was only on 29, but unfortunately dropped him on the boundary. It proved to be a costly drop for the home side! St.Annes CC finished their innings on 166 all out. Stand out bowling performance from Paul Hindmarch. He finished with magnificent figures of 7-37 in 15.5 overs. Well deserved from the big man.

At the break, Penrith CC were feeling confident in chasing down the low total that the visitors set. Chris Marrow and Nicky Burns walked out into the middle, to try and give Penrith CC only their second win of the season. The home side got off to the worst of starts with Nicky Burns getting caught at cover, 2nd ball of the innings. The home side were put under pressure from the first over. A recovery was being built with Chris Marrow and Paul Hindmarch at the crease. The pair put on a partnership of 31 before Paul was caught at short cover. There was only one more significant partnership in the dismal run chase, and that came between Marrow and Threlkeld, they put on 28 together, before Marrow was caught behind for 49.

The game was then heavily in the favor of the visitors at 96-6. Penrith struggled to get any partnership together from their onwards, and were bowled out for a cheap score of 124.

Their pro (Shadly Van Schalkwyk) finished with figures of 4-37.

The Penrith 1st XI will be needing a desperate win against Lancaster on the weekend, as they currently find themselves at the bottom of the log.
